Field Service Engineer – Medical & Ophthalmic Equipment . Two Positions Available – North and South. Full manufacturer training will be provided.
Looking to recruit two experienced Field Service Engineers to install, maintain, service and repair specialist ophthalmic diagnostic and imaging equipment used by hospitals, healthcare providers and research organisations.
We welcome applications from experienced engineers across a range of industries. Previous experience with medical or ophthalmic equipment would be an advantage but is not essential. What matters most is your practical engineering ability, particularly your experience diagnosing faults, servicing and repairing electrical and mechanical equipment.
We are recruiting for two positions:
South: Based in or near Buckinghamshire.
North: Based in Northern England, ideally in a location that provides good access to Northern England and Scotland.
Both positions involve extensive travel throughout the UK, including regular overnight stays. Your home location will determine your primary service area, although you must be willing and able to travel nationally when required.
Applicants must currently reside in the UK and have the unrestricted right to work full-time in the UK. Applications from candidates currently living outside the UK will not be considered.
About the Role
- You will be responsible for supporting Canon Eyecare, Kowa and other specialist ophthalmic diagnostic and imaging equipment installed at NHS hospitals, private healthcare providers and research organisations.
- This is a practical, hands-on engineering position involving equipment installation, planned maintenance, fault diagnosis, repair, calibration and technical support.
- You will need to be confident working with mechanical and electrical systems, electronic hardware, Windows-based computers and specialist equipment software.
- You will frequently work independently at customer premises, managing your own workload and appointments. You will also work closely with colleagues, equipment manufacturers and customer IT departments to resolve technical problems.
Knowledge of healthcare IT systems, including DICOM, PACS and HL7, would be beneficial but is not essential.
Key Responsibilities
1. Equipment Installation, Servicing and Repair
- Install, configure and commission ophthalmic diagnostic and imaging equipment.
- Carry out routine preventative maintenance, servicing, calibration and equipment upgrades.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, electronic, hardware and software faults.
- Investigate technical problems and identify effective solutions.
- Test and verify equipment following installation, servicing or repair.
- Provide customers with training and guidance on equipment operation.
- Complete accurate service reports and maintain compliance with company procedures, quality standards and medical device requirements.
2. Computer, Software and Technical Support
- Set up and troubleshoot Windows-based computers and specialist equipment software.
- Diagnose basic network, connectivity and communication problems.
- Assist with software installations, upgrades and equipment integration.
- Work with manufacturers, colleagues and customer IT departments to resolve more complex technical issues.
- Where experience permits, provide support for servers, databases, backups and healthcare IT integrations.
3. Customer Service and Daily Operations
- Respond to customer telephone calls and emails within the same working day.
- Maintain accurate service tickets, customer records, job reports and equipment histories.
- Manage your diary, appointments and workload efficiently.
- Meet agreed customer service commitments and response times.
- Assist with equipment preparation, warehouse activities and logistics when required.
- Attend manufacturer training courses in the UK and overseas.
- Provide occasional support for product demonstrations, exhibitions, customer training and equipment testing.
Essential Experience and Skills
We are looking for established field service engineers with practical experience and the confidence to work independently.
You must have:
- Relevant field service engineering experience, with hands-on responsibility for maintaining, fault-finding and repairing electrical and mechanical equipment.
- Strong practical mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills.
- Experience diagnosing and resolving equipment faults rather than simply replacing components.
- Experience supporting Windows computers, software applications and basic network connections.
- The ability to read and understand technical manuals, service instructions, wiring diagrams and engineering documentation.
- Excellent organisational skills, including the ability to manage your diary, plan visits and prioritise work efficiently.
- Good communication skills and a professional, customer-focused approach.
- The ability to work independently, take responsibility for problems and see jobs through to completion.
- A relevant engineering or technical qualification, such as a degree, HND or equivalent, or substantial practical engineering experience.
Please note: These are experienced engineering positions, not trainee roles. You do not need previous medical equipment experience, but you must have a solid background in hands-on equipment servicing, maintenance and repair. General IT support experience without practical engineering experience will not be sufficient.
Desirable Experience and Qualifications
Experience in any of the following areas would be an advantage:
- Ophthalmology, medical imaging or diagnostic equipment.
- Servicing medical devices or other specialist technical equipment.
- Working with NHS hospitals, private healthcare providers or research organisations.
- Healthcare imaging systems and protocols, including DICOM, PACS and HL7.
- Microsoft Windows Server and Microsoft SQL Server.
- Database administration, backups and restores.
- Active Directory, Group Policy and user permissions.
- Managed network switches, VLANs, firewalls and VPNs.
- Microsoft Windows Server, Azure or SQL Server qualifications.
- Cyber Essentials, medical device cybersecurity and information security.
- ISO quality management systems, particularly ISO 13485.
These are desirable rather than essential requirements. We are particularly interested in engineers with strong practical skills who are willing to develop their knowledge of specialist medical equipment.
Driving and Travel Requirements
- Travel is a fundamental part of both positions.
You must:
- Hold a full, clean UK driving licence.
- Be confident driving a company-provided van as part of your everyday work.
- Be willing and able to travel regularly throughout the UK.
- Available for regular overnight stays away from home.
- Be prepared to travel to Ireland and occasionally overseas when required.
- Flexible to work occasional weekends or outside normal working hours to meet customer requirements.
- Hold a valid passport and be able to undertake international travel.
Your main service area will depend on your location, but these are national field service positions. Applicants must be comfortable working well beyond their immediate local area.
Salary and Benefits
- Salary of £45,000–£50,000 per annum, depending on experience.
- Company-provided branded van for business travel.
- Company laptop.
- Company mobile phone.
- Company pension.
- Annual holiday allowance, including public holidays.
- Full manufacturer training, including opportunities to attend courses in the UK and overseas.
How to Apply
Please send your CV together with a short covering note confirming the following:
Whether you are applying for the South or North position.
- Your current town or city.
- The types of equipment you have installed, maintained, serviced and repaired, including the industries you have worked in.
- Your experience with Windows computers, software, networking and any relevant IT systems.
- That you hold a full, clean UK driving licence and are willing to drive a company-provided van.
- That you currently live in the UK and have the right to work full-time in the UK.
We are particularly interested in understanding your practical engineering experience, the equipment you have worked on and your ability to diagnose and resolve technical problems independently.
We welcome applications from experienced engineers in different industries who are looking to apply their skills in the specialist medical equipment sector.
