Senior Backend Game Engineer Role Overview:
As a Senior Backend Engineer, you’ll be responsible for designing and building the scalable backend systems that power multiplayer gameplay. You’ll work closely with a multi-disciplinary team to deliver reliable, performant backend services that enhance connectivity and enable seamless player experiences.
Senior Backend Game Engineer Key Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the design and development of backend infrastructure for online multiplayer games
- Build and fine-tune services such as authentication, matchmaking, lobby systems, and scalable server orchestration
- Create high-performance backend components using technologies like C++, C#, Go, and Node.js
- Collaborate across teams including network engineers, gameplay developers, and DevOps to integrate multiplayer features
- Optimize and scale services to handle real-time, high-volume player interactions
- Develop and maintain APIs and microservices that support reliable communication between game clients and backend systems
- Assist with project planning by providing clear technical estimates, documentation, and progress reports
Required Skills & Experience
- Strong verbal and written communication, with a collaborative mindset
- Proficiency in at least two of the following: C++, C#, Go, Node.js (preference for C++ and C#)
- In-depth experience with major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud)
- Solid foundation in distributed systems, data structures, and algorithms
- 5+ years of backend development experience, ideally within the gaming industry
- Expertise in real-time networking protocols and services (WebSockets, RPC, REST, gRPC)
- Experience with matchmaking systems, session management, and anti-cheat mechanisms
- Familiarity with both SQL and NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, Redis, MongoDB, etc.)
- Strong understanding of microservices, container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes), and scalable architectures
- Experience building high-performance systems for low-latency multiplayer environments
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Familiarity with CI/CD tools and DevOps workflows
- Hands-on with GBaaS platforms like Azure PlayFab, AccelByte, Nakama, or Pragma
- Experience integrating with console or PC online services (e.g., PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Steam, Nintendo)
- Knowledge of Unreal Engine 5’s networking systems and client-server architecture
