Job Description

Senior PHP Developer – Macclesfield (Hybrid) – £35,000 to £50,000 + Benefits

Are you an experienced PHP developer who writes clean, maintainable, and secure code you’re genuinely proud of? We’re looking for a confident back-end engineer who can design, build, and improve robust systems — and clearly explain not just what the code does, but why it’s built that way.

If you care about code quality, team collaboration, and building production-ready applications the right way, this could be the perfect role for you.

About the Role:

As a Senior PHP Developer, you’ll design and develop internal tools and customer-facing web applications. You’ll focus on writing high-quality PHP code that powers scalable back-end services and RESTful APIs.

You’ll work closely with front-end and full-stack developers to deliver secure, efficient, and user-friendly features while contributing to architectural decisions for new and existing systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain clean, well-structured PHP code for web applications and internal systems
  • Build and improve RESTful APIs and back-end services
  • Collaborate with cross-functional developers to deliver secure and high-performance features
  • Contribute to system architecture and technical design decisions
  • Take ownership of projects from planning and estimation through development, testing, and deployment
  • Troubleshoot and debug real-world production issues using logs, investigation, and thorough testing
  • Review and provide constructive feedback on pull requests to maintain code quality across the team
  • Work on both legacy systems and greenfield projects, refactoring where needed
  • Deliver robust, production-ready code without cutting corners

Required Skills & Experience:

  • 3+ years of professional experience writing and maintaining PHP applications
  • Strong understanding of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) and SOLID principles
  • Experience building and maintaining RESTful APIs and back-end systems
  • Solid knowledge of secure coding practices and performance optimisation
  • Experience working with relational databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL
  • Familiarity with Git Version Control, automated testing, and CI/CD pipelines
  • Strong problem-solving and software design skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a growing development team
  • Comfortable working in a hybrid or remote environment
  • UK work authorisation required

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with Docker and containerised development environments
  • Familiarity with AWS or other cloud platforms
  • Experience with headless CMS platforms or content APIs
  • Basic front-end awareness and understanding of UI implementation challenges

Why Join Us?

  • Play a key role in shaping how we design, build, test, and deploy software
  • Work on impactful internal tools and public-facing applications
  • Collaborate with an experienced, thoughtful team focused on sustainable development practices
  • Enjoy autonomy and the opportunity to suggest and implement better technical solutions
  • Flexible working arrangements in a hybrid Macclesfield (SK10) location
  • Support for ongoing professional development

Salary & Benefits:

  • Job Type: Full-time
  • Location: Hybrid remote – Macclesfield SK10 (United Kingdom)
  • Salary: £35,000–£50,000 per year
  • Company pension
  • Private medical insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Health & Wellbeing Programme
  • Gym membership
  • Casual dress
  • Free on-site parking

Additional Pay:

  • Bonus scheme
  • Performance bonus

If you’re a PHP developer who values clean architecture, maintainable code, security best practices, and strong team collaboration — and you’re ready to make a real impact — we’d love to hear from you.
