Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity to join us as a Junior Software Developer within our established Technology team.

This role is ideal for someone who has completed a software development apprenticeship, relevant degree or has equivalent practical experience and is looking to develop their career in a commercial environment.

Working alongside experienced colleagues, you’ll help support and improve applications that are important to the day-to-day running, while gaining hands-on experience across software development, cloud technologies, APIs and system integration.

Our technology landscape is evolving from long-established systems towards a more modern, cloud-based architecture, allowing you to work across both legacy and emerging technologies. You don’t need to know everything from day one – we’re looking for someone with a good technical foundation, curiosity and a genuine desire to learn.

This is a hybrid role, with a minimum of three days per week based at our office.

Junior Developer Main Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain and improve applications used across the company.
  • Investigate and help resolve application issues and defects.
  • Support and develop integrations between our systems and third-party platforms.
  • Build and consume APIs and gain experience with REST APIs, web services and messaging.
  • Support the modernisation and progressive replacement of legacy applications.
  • Gain exposure to major technology initiatives including Order Management, CRM, ERP, Point of Sale, Warehouse Management, Payments and Customer Data.
  • Write clean, understandable and maintainable code.
  • Use source control, take part in code reviews and follow agreed development standards.
  • Support testing, CI/CD, application monitoring and automated deployment processes.
  • Work closely with experienced developers and colleagues across the wider Technology team.
  • Continue developing your technical and business knowledge through hands-on experience, learning and training.

Benefits include:

  • Bonus scheme and regular incentives
  • 33 days’ holiday, including bank holidays
  • An extra paid day off for your birthday
  • Additional holiday for long service
  • Generous colleague discounts, including for family and friends
  • Recognised qualifications, study support and career progression
  • Wellbeing support and employee & family counselling
  • Contributory pension and life assurance
  • Enhanced maternity and paternity packages
  • Charity initiatives supporting causes close to your heart

The Ideal Candidate - Essential Skills

  • Completed a software development apprenticeship, relevant degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science or a related subject, or have equivalent practical experience.
  • A good understanding of software development principles.
  • Experience with C#, .NET or another modern programming language.
  • Basic knowledge of SQL and relational databases.
  • An understanding of APIs and system integration.
  • Experience using source control such as Git.
  • Good problem-solving and communication skills.
  • A willingness to work across both legacy and modern technologies.
  • A strong desire to learn and develop as a software professional.

Desirable Skills:

  • Commercial development experience gained through an apprenticeship, graduate role or other junior development position.
  • Experience with C#/.NET and Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Exposure to REST APIs, Microsoft Azure or CI/CD.
  • Experience with VB.NET, Windows Forms or older Microsoft applications.
  • Experience supporting applications in a live business environment.
  • Knowledge of retail or e-commerce technology.
  • Exposure to Microsoft Dynamics NAV or Dynamics 365 Business Central.
