Job Description

We are recruiting for a PHP Developer to join the Network Development team in Polegate. The salary for this role will depend on your experience.

Established in 2018. We are a leading local alternative network provider of full fibre broadband in East Sussex. We are headquartered in Polegate and have an existing broadband network in East Sussex. Our broadband network can supply our standard installed customers with anything up to 10 Gigabits in both download and uploads.

We are a community-oriented network operator, whose aim is to significantly upgrade our region’s broadband infrastructure, providing local jobs and keeping local money in the areas we serve. We are a vital enabler to grow our digital local economy, thereby creating further quality jobs. Lightning Fibre has bold plans for growth and development.

PHP Developer Responsibility:

You will be responsible for developing and maintaining our internal platform, built on a bespoke MVC framework, ensuring it remains robust, scalable, and efficient.

While this is primarily a backend-focused role, we do not have dedicated frontend developers or designers, so a good understanding of frontend technologies will be beneficial. This is a hybrid role, with flexibility to work remotely, but developers are expected to collaborate in the office a few times a month.

Key task and responsibilities:

  • Develop, maintain, and enhance our platform using PHP and our bespoke MVC framework.
  • Work with REST APIs for data integration and system interoperability.
  • Manage version control using Git, following best practices in branching, merging, and code review.
  • Optimise SQL database queries and ensure data integrity.
  • Implement and maintain frontend elements as needed (basic HTML, CSS, JavaScript).
  • Debug and troubleshoot issues to ensure system stability and performance.
  • Contribute to improving development workflows, coding standards, and best practices.
  • Using Jira and confluence to track, manage and document work.

PHP Developer Requirements:

  • Strong PHP development skills with experience in an MVC framework (bespoke experience is a plus).
  • Proficiency in Git/version control systems.
  • Experience with REST API development and integration.
  • Strong MySQL and PostgreSQL skills, including query optimisation.
  • Experience with agile software methodologies.
  • Understanding and experience of security first programming (running web applications in a hostile environment).
  • Solid understanding of object-oriented programming (OOP) principles.
  • Basic proficiency in frontend technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript).
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a hybrid environment.
  • Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with Docker or other containerisation tools.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines.
  • Knowledge of caching mechanisms like Redis or Memcached.
  • Experience with unit testing and test-driven development (TDD).
  • Understanding of BSD/Linux command line tools.
  • Experience of working with Perl, Python and Golang.

Please submit your CV together with a short covering letter or message which should outline what you will bring to this role.

Benefits:

  • Company pension
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Employee discount
  • Enhanced maternity leave
  • Enhanced paternity leave
  • Health & wellbeing programme
  • Life insurance
  • Referral programme
  • Sick pay

Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday (Day shift)

Ability to commute/relocate:

  • Polegate BN26: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)

Application question(s):

Do you have a full and clean UK driving licence?

Work authorisation:

  • United Kingdom (required)
