An ambitious, technology-driven healthcare business is looking to recruit a Full-Stack Software Engineer to join its growing engineering team as one of its first UK-based engineering hires.
Working directly with the CTO, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping and delivering the company’s software applications, supporting clinical teams, patients and internal users. This is an opportunity for an engineer who enjoys taking ownership, working autonomously and building reliable, high-quality software from initial requirements through to production.
The role spans the full application stack, including web applications, command-line tools, APIs, backend services and data infrastructure. You’ll translate user needs into clear technical specifications, deliver end-to-end features and take responsibility for their quality, performance and ongoing support.
You’ll work with a modern technology stack incorporating functional programming, event-sourced systems, AWS and infrastructure-as-code tooling. Experience with PureScript is not essential; the client is particularly interested in engineers with strong functional programming fundamentals, sound engineering judgement and the motivation to learn new technologies.
The team also embraces AI-assisted software development, so you’ll have the opportunity to help shape how coding agents are used, evaluated and integrated into a disciplined engineering workflow.
This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on engineer seeking significant ownership, close collaboration with technical leadership and the chance to make a meaningful contribution to healthcare technology.
Key Responsibilities
- End-to-end development: Design and deliver features across accessible, responsive web interfaces, APIs, backend services and database layers.
- Backend engineering: Build and maintain services and third-party integrations, including PostgreSQL data models, queries and safe database schema migrations.
- Event-driven architecture: Develop event schemas, projections and reliable processing workflows, with a focus on idempotency and replayability.
- Test-driven delivery: Apply behaviour-driven development (BDD) principles by defining acceptance scenarios and writing tests before implementation. Use Playwright to develop robust end-to-end acceptance and regression tests.
- AI-assisted development: Specify, coordinate and oversee substantial implementation tasks using coding agents, independently reviewing, debugging, testing and integrating their output.
- Agent evaluation: Maintain representative, appropriately protected datasets and reproducible benchmarks to assess coding agent performance, task success and quality.
- Production ownership: Release, monitor, troubleshoot and support the features you deliver across shared AWS infrastructure and reproducible Nix-based environments.
- Engineering collaboration: Work closely with the CTO on technical decisions, application architecture and engineering priorities, partnering with the production engineer on infrastructure and operational reliability.
- Continuous improvement: Champion automated testing, code quality, security and efficient delivery practices while helping establish engineering standards as the team grows.
Essential Skills and Experience
- We’re looking for an experienced software engineer who combines strong technical fundamentals with a proactive, ownership-driven approach.
- Full-stack development: Substantial professional experience taking web application features from initial user requirements through development, testing and production deployment.
- Frontend engineering: Strong experience with single-page applications, HTML, CSS, responsive design, accessibility, WebSockets, browser storage and debugging.
- Functional programming: Practical experience with functional programming, ideally in a statically typed language, alongside a good understanding of type systems and controlled side effects.
- Backend and APIs: Experience developing backend services and APIs, working with SQL databases and designing relational data models.
- Automated testing: Proven experience building and maintaining reliable Playwright end-to-end tests, using test-first practices to translate acceptance criteria into executable tests.
- AI-assisted engineering: Experience directing coding agents through substantial development tasks, including specification, task coordination, independent verification, code review and integration.
- LLM and agent evaluation: Practical experience evaluating large language models or coding agents using representative datasets, meaningful metrics, comparative benchmarks and failure analysis, while balancing quality, cost and latency.
- Software delivery: Strong engineering discipline across automated testing, source control, code reviews and CI/CD, with a track record of delivering efficiently without compromising quality, security or compliance.
- Ownership and autonomy: The ability to take responsibility for technical outcomes, diagnose complex issues and deliver features independently in a fast-moving environment.
Desirable Experience
Experience with any of the following would be advantageous:
- Functional programming languages and ecosystems, including PureScript, Haskell, Gleam or Erlang/OTP.
- CI/CD pipelines and GitHub Actions.
- Event sourcing, including projections, idempotent processing and replay, as well as the actor model.
- Relational database design and schema management.
- Nix or NixOS for reproducible development and deployment environments.
- AWS cloud services and infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or OpenTofu.
- Security engineering, including end-to-end encryption, WebCrypto, WebAuthn and passkeys.
- Healthcare technology, integrations and regulatory standards, including HIPAA, FHIR and HL7.
Please note: Prior experience with PureScript is not required. Strong functional programming foundations and a willingness to learn the existing technology stack are more important.
Salary and Benefits
- Salary: £55,000–£72,000 per annum, depending on experience.
- Equity: Employee stock ownership plan.
- Working arrangement: Hybrid remote.
- Location: Cambridge, CB4, UK.
Education: Bachelor’s degree required.
Right to work: Applicants must already have the right to work in the United Kingdom.
Why Consider This Role?
- This is a rare opportunity to join an early-stage engineering team where your contribution will have a direct impact on the product, the technology and the way software is delivered.
- You’ll work closely with the CTO, take genuine ownership of features in production and help establish engineering practices within a healthcare-focused technology business. The role offers exposure to functional programming, event-driven architecture and AI-assisted development, alongside the opportunity to influence technical decisions as the team expands.
- If you’re a technically strong full-stack engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, working autonomously and building dependable software with modern tools, this could be an excellent next step.
